1 Warm Up Question November 30, 2010 List as many rights you can that are protected under the Constitution. When you are finished, take out 3 sheets of notebook paper. Go to the front and use the stapler found on the green desk.

2 November 30, 2010 EQ: Why is the Bill of Rights important to know as American Citizens? Objectives:What is the Bill of Rights? Students will learn that the 1 st Amendment protects your freedom of speech, religion and press etc. Key Terms to Define: Bill of Rights Homework:Finish 1 st Amendment

3 Amendment Journal -You will create a Journal entry for every Amendment that will include the following Official Definition: 8 th Grader Definition: Why it’s Important: Visual Representation: You will be responsible to learn and memorize the first 10 amendments for the Amendment quiz next Wednesday (12/8). You will keep these journals in the room in your class outbox at all times. If you do not finish the classwork in class then you will have to take them home. -If you lose it you will have to start all over again. -This will be work 20 pts.

4 Constitution Bill of Rights and Preamble -The United States Constitution was passed June 21, 1788 -With the Constitution, a list of basic rights and freedoms were added to the Constitution called the Bill of Rights. -The Bill of Rights are the first 10 Amendments. What is an Amendment?

5 Preamble of the Constitution What is a Preamble? -Copy this down word for word in your Journal. “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” You will be responsible to know this word for word for the Amendment quiz

6 First Amendment Definition- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Bullet Form the definition of First Amendment -Take 20 seconds with your neighbor to discuss a possible sentence in 8 th grade terms. -Create a visual representation of one of the rights protected under the First Amendment.
