Hairdressers study the new client's face, hair and scalp. They determine whether it is thick and heavy or whether it needs a perm for more body. When a change of color is desired, the hair is tinted or highlighted. The hair is cut to the agreed length and form, curled and died. The hair is then blow-dried and combed to create a specific style or look.

8 hours a day 5-6 days a week - full time. You usually have to wear black, if working for someone. If you work for yourself you can wear whatever you want! You work indoors. There are a few risks of injuries, such as cutting yourself with scissors or getting chemicals like bleach on yourself while bleaching hair.

Hairdressers usually make 10- 20 dollars an hour if working for someone. If you own your own business you make whatever you charge someone for an appointment. Hairdressers make around $25 000-$40 000 a year full time. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Competition is high when wanting to be a hairdresser in this economy. But people are always going to need hairdressers no matter what! If I can’t find someone to work for or a company, I can always open my own salon!

You can call the National Apprenticeships Helpline and an Apprenticeship. This can vary from 1-5 years. It is dependent on the contract you have drawn up with your employer and on your own ability. It’s usually $5000-$10,000 a year. You can also go to University, you usually need grade 10 math, and you obviously need to be graduated.

I’m interested in this career because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m very into style, and hair and all of that stuff, and I love styling and cutting hair. I cut my sisters hair all the time, and I’m getting better at it! I have tons of fun doing it, and I enjoy it a lot.
