1 Do Now: Skills & Aptitudes *Answer all questions in complete sentences unless otherwise specified. Please number your responses in your notebook. 1. What skills or aptitudes (a natural talent) do you have RIGHT NOW that can make you marketable in our economy? 2. How might you put your skills and aptitudes to work right now even though you are under 16 years of age to make some money?

2 Skills and Aptitudes

3 Your Strengths Wk Book Activity 44-45 On Activity 44, list you strengths. If you cannot figure them out for yourself, ask a friend in class who knows you well to tell you your strengths. You can also go back to pg 39 or use the list on page 44 in your textbook. On Activity 45, choose ten (10) of the personal strengths you or your friend identified on the left under the, “I AM:” heading. Then answer the column on the right indicating when you have used that strength.

4 Often One Task Uses Many Different Skills… If James were to act in a school play, what skills would be required? – Read the play (reading) – Interpret the play (critical thinking) – Memorize – Cooperate with others (teamwork) – Project his voice (public speaking) – Perform in front of hundreds of people (public speaking)

5 Many of these Skills are… Transferable: They can be applied to other situations. – Example: English class or choir.

6 Aptitude Something that you have a natural talent for or something that comes easy to you.

7 Skills Divided into Six Categories Basic Skills – Anyone can perform these skills. Social Skills - Being able to be comfortable speaking with many people. Complex Problem Solving Skills – Ability to solve difficult problems. (Advanced Knowledge) Technical Skills –Referred to as "technicians" in their chosen field (i.e. carpenter, mechanic, computer programmer, etc) Systems Skills – Understand how an entire system works. Resource Management Skills - efficient and effective deployment and allocation of an organization’s resources when they are needed.

8 Roles, Occupations and Vocations A role is what you are (son, daughter, sister, brother, friend, etc.) An occupation or vocation refers to what you do. – Occupation is paid employment. – Vocation is more like a special skill. (student)

9 Name that Skill Workbook Pg 47 Pg 47, list specific skills you’ve mastered. Write three accomplishments that gave you most satisfaction or that you’re most proud of. In the middle column, list the skills you used in that accomplishment. If you have a hard time identifying these skills, talk with your family and friends to help you. Leave the last column blank for now.

10 Skills Identification Workbook pg 48 Put a checkmark next to each general skill that you feel competent in, and an ‘X’ next to those you want to acquire in the future. You’re not required to select from more that one category of skills. Answer the questions below.
