2 Communications Nova Scotia Full-service communications agency Non-partisan Provide communication planning and marketing services to departments, senior officials, ministers Provide production services: photography, video, design, edit, print, promotional products

3 Communication Policy Policy statement: The Government of Nova Scotia recognizes that a central agency for the management and delivery of communication services will ensure issues are thoroughly reviewed, communication goals are met, and the policies and actions of government are clearly communicated to Nova Scotians.

4 Communication Policy All departments and agencies must:  Distribute all government news releases through CNS  Co-ordinate advertising, print, publishing, graphic design, editorial, web, and related services through CNS  Ensure government Web materials are developed in accordance with the Internet policy and guidelines

5 Communication Policy (cont’d)  Receive approval of communications plans and related materials from their Minister, Deputy Minister and their CNS Managing Director  Acquire approval from the Premier’s Office through the Managing Director for any communications plans involving the Premier

13 Queen’s Printer More than 4,000 jobs last year –Posters –Brochures –Manuals –Reports –Hansard –T4s and T4As Increasing focus on value for dollar, variable data jobs Innovative approaches

16 Queen’s Printer Nova Scotia is the only province in Canada to separate preparation and distribution of the Regulations and the Acts (Statutes) Acts are handled by the Legislative Council –Bills are sent electronically to the digital printer queue at Queen’s Printer for assembly and printing –122 copies are returned to the House in time for the next day’s session –House of Assembly provides hard copy of all statutes on an annual basis and QP scans, prints and has about 150 copies case bound for distribution

17 Queen’s Printer Queen’s Printer is also responsible for production of the hard copy editions of Hansard –We print 50 copies per day when the House of Assembly is in session –Less than 24 hour turnaround –Averages about 100 pages sometimes goes to 325 pages Royal Gazette Part 1 and Part 2 are prepared by the Department of Justice –Printed at a satellite office of Queen’s Printer in the Department of Justice building

18 Royal Gazette Part 1 Royal Gazette Part 1 is the Province’s official government record of proclamations and other notices pursuant to a government act or statute The Royal Gazette Part 1 is published weekly Unofficial PDF copies (including archive copies) are available for free on-line Future plans include changing the legislation to make on-line versions official and to charge for downloads

19 Royal Gazette Part 2 Royal Gazette Part 2, published every other week, strictly publishes new regulations, changes or amendments In publication for 34 years Includes petroleum product pricing and revisions to summary offence tickets Hard copy subscription requests dwindling
