2 Qing Dynasty The last dynasty in China that collapsed from both internal and external factors.

3 Opium War War fought over the shipping and trading of illegal drugs by the British into China.

4 Taiping Rebellion radical political and religious upheaval where a leader believed himself to be the younger brother of Jesus Christ and a group formed to lead a rebellion against the Qing Dynasty.

5 Boxer Rebellion secret group of peasants murdered thousands of foreigners to rebel against foreign influence.

6 Sun Yat- Sen The first leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party and replaced by Chiang Kai- Shek.

7 Chinese Nationalist Party Governed China from 1928-1949.Originated as a revolutionary league working for the overthrow of the Chinese monarchy.

8 Chiang Kai- Shek Became leader of the Chinese Nationalist Party by succeeding Sun Yat- Sen. Was commander-in-chief of the Nationalist Army and forced to flea to Taiwan when the Communist took control of China.

9 The Long March Started in Shanghai with Mao Zedong and fellow communists fleeing Nationalist Army. Only 10,000 of the original group survived the 6,000 mile march.

10 Mao Zedong Communist leader of China from 1949-1976. Policies included The Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

11 October 1, 1989 On this day in history Mao Zedong declared the People’s Republic of China a country.

12 Great Leap Forward Mao Zedong's plan to speed up economic growth in China and surpass the United States in economic power that failed.

13 The Cultural Revolution The plan to reform the communist party in China that removed an opposition to the leadership of Mao Zedong.

14 Red Guards Group of young people that were loyal to Mao Zedong during the Cultural Revolution

15 Little Red Book The collection of sayings and quotes of Mao Zedong that every Red Guard owned.

16 Communism An economic and political system in which property is owned collectively and labor is organized in a way that is supposed to benefit all people.
