2 Introduction The word volcano comes from an island off Sicily called volcano that was originally named after Vulcan the Roman god of fire. The highest volcano in the world was the Antofalla volcano in Argentina reaching 6,500 meters above sea level. These are some of the famous volcanoes known all around the world Etna in Sicily, Vesuvius in Italy, Krakatoa in Indonesia and Mt St Helens in the USA. Vesuvius caused huge damage because when the volcano erupted all the ash buried the town.

This is formed by the build up of pressure in the centre.
