2 Basic issues on NS (nutrition) Nutrition has been marginalized by policy makers There’s limited advocacy and awareness to educate key stakeholders Limited capacity for NS

3 Long term consideration (Uganda case) Capacity building/ improvement: National to community level (review training needs in data collection and analysis) Advocacy thru’ national conference & lobbying –To raise awareness and increase demand for nutrition information to policy makers –Seek political commitment –Annual budgetary allocations for NS support –Inclusion of specific nutrition indicators in HIMS Review information needs of the country Resources for capacity building & for undertaking & supporting NS (+ tech expertise)

4 Somalia Donors and intervening agencies demanding the information FSAU model –Capacity- 13 permanent Somali field staff (Dip/certificate holders) + 6 Msc nutrition graduates +1 project manager –Annual budget: about 1million US$ –Partnerships with agencies- equipment/ staff –Training= own staff and partners; survey enumerators based in regions; partnership with local institutions

5 Ethiopia Many ministries dealing with different aspects of nutrition (MOA, MOH) Review of the current undertakings and streamline the operations
