Now I know… Children, typically boys, who sell newspapers. Most of the boys stay out past midnight selling extras. The youngest boy pictured in the group is 9 years old. The 8 year old boy below that picture is selling papers after he just recovered from a second pneumonia attack. He was found later selling papers during a big rain storm.

I see… I think… I wonder…

Now I know… Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to the fight against apartheid – a policy which kept black and white South Africans apart and denied black citizens the right to vote. He was imprisoned in 1964 for his aggressive opposition to South Africa’s racist government and was held for 26 years. In 1990, after his release, Mandela was elected President of the African National Congress. In 1993 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end apartheid.

I see… I think… I wonder…

Now I know… Mother Teresa (1910-1997) was a Roman Catholic nun, who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world. She spent many years in Calcutta, India where she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation devoted to helping those in great need. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and has become a symbol of charitable selfless work. She was beatified in 2003, the first step on the path to sainthood, within the Catholic church. Quotes If you judge people, you have no time to love them. Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
