N. Eric Heiselt Director, K-12 Outreach, BCoE, MSU Shaun Cooper BCoE Outreach Programs Engineering is Elementary

What is Engineering? What does Engineering look like? What do Engineers do? Advance Ideas Put Science into reality Apply mathematics to reality Make Life Better Create solutions to problems

Engineering Design Process Ask Plan Imagine Create Improve

Engineering in the Classroom How can this apply? Don’t want to add to my already overburdened day Cost is an issue Know-how

Create a Critter Mechanical Engineering Problem-solving Artistic nature and motor-skills Synthesis of comparative anatomy and differentiation.

Supplies Group File Folder Paper 5 Poster board strips (3 cm x 22 cm) 12 brass fasteners Scotch tape Scissors Hole punch Design Challenge Card Other supplies for the classroom Markers Crayons Extra strips Extra fasteners Feathers, Google eyes

Create a Critter Design Challenge Ask: Can you team create a critter that uses at least two different types of mechanisms for movement? Imagine: Discuss what your critter might look like. Be sure to listen to everyone on your team. Plan: Use the pencil and paper to draw a critter, using at least one idea from each person on your team. Decide which parts of the critter will move. Create: Once you have a plan. Collect your supplies. Create your critter. Improve: Do your moving mechanisms work the way you wanted? Do you need to make any improvements? Work together to find solutions.
