Microsoft FrontPage 2003 Illustrated Complete Creating a Frames Page

2Creating a Frames Page Unit F  Understand frames  Create a frames page using a template  Set pages to open in a frames page  Create a new page in a frames page Objectives

3Creating a Frames Page Unit F Objectives  Set multiple pages to open in a frame  Create a new frame in a frames page  Delete a frame from a frames page  Set frame properties

4Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a Frames Page  A frames page contains two or more windows (or frames), each displaying a separate Web page  The Web pages in each frame can contain their own scroll bars

5Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames  A frames page, or a frameset, is a single Web page that divides the browser window into two or more windows  Frames pages do not contain content - only the specifications to create the frames within it  Use a frames page when you want each frame to display content independent of the other frames

6Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames (cont.)  When you open a frames page in a browser, first the browser opens the frames page, then the pages set to open in the frames  If the frames page contains three frames, the browser is really displaying four Web pages - the frames page and one page in each frame

7Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames (cont.)  Frames page in a browser

8Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames (cont.)  Advantages of using frames pages: –Allows you to provide uniform information, such as navigation options or a company logo –Hyperlinks in one frame might link to other pages in the Web site; hyperlinks in another frame might open pages in a different frame –You can set a page displayed in a frame so that it never changes, insuring that information is always visible –A frames page can load faster than a Web page that doesn’t contain frames

9Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames (cont.)  Disadvantages of using frames pages: –Some browsers cannot display frames pages –The main frame appears in less space than what is provided by a full browser window –Frames pages can be overwhelming to viewers if poorly designed

10Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames (cont.)  When a frame is selected, a blue border appears inside the frame’s border  After creating a frames page, two buttons appear in each frame: –The Set Initial Page button lets you set an existing Web page to open in the frame when the frames page opens –The New Page button creates a new page and at the same time set it to open in the frames page

11Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames (cont.)

12Creating a Frames Page Unit F Understanding Frames (cont.)  Pages used in a frames page are like any other Web pages, but most are designed for use only in a frames page  Each Web page in a frames page has a filename and a title  Only the title of the frames page appears in the browser’s title bar when the frames page is open  When the content of a Web page displayed in a frame exceeds the space available, scroll bars appear on the frame

13Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a Frames Page Using a Template  The easiest and fastest way to include a frames page in a Web site is to create it using a template  A frames page template is a Web page that contains the specifications for the individual locations and sizes of the frames in a frames page  When you create a frames page using a template, FrontPage assigns each frame in the page a name and creates its initial size and location in the frames page

14Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a Frames Page Using a Template (cont.)  FrontPage includes many different frames page template to create frames pages with two, three, and four frames  Templates include different orientations for the frames  You should select the frames page template that most closely matches the arrangement of information you have planned

15Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a Frames Page Using a Template (cont.)  Frames pages templates

16Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Pages to Open in a Frames Page  When you create a frames page, each frame contains the Set Initial Page and New Page buttons  Use the Set Initial Page button to open an existing Web page in the frame  Use the New Page button to create a new Web page in a frame  You don’t usually add pages appearing in a frames page to the Web site’s navigation structure

17Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a New Page in a Frames Page  When you open the frames page in a browser, the browser opens a page in each frame  The initial page that opens in each frame might be one that already exists in the site or a new page  You use the New Page button to create a new page in a frame

18Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a New Page in a Frames Page (cont.)  You save the page with a filename and page title  A new page that you create and set to open in a frames page appears in the Folder List with other pages

19Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a New Page in a Frames Page (cont.)  New Web page created in the main frame

20Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Multiple Pages to Open in a Frame  You can set a link in any frame to open a new page in: –The same frame –A different frame –A new browser window –The same browser window (which replaces the frames page)  A target frame is the frame in which to open a new Web page

21Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Multiple Pages to Open in a Frame (cont.)  Target Frame dialog box

22Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Multiple Pages to Open in a Frame (cont.)  Common frame targets

23Creating a Frames Page Unit F Creating a New Frame in a Frames Page  You can split an existing frame into two frames  You can split horizontally or vertically

24Creating a Frames Page Unit F Deleting a Frame from a Frames Page  When you delete a frame from a frames page, you are only deleting the HTML tag that creates the frame  You are not deleting the Web page that appears in the frame  To delete the page itself, you must delete it in Folders view

25Creating a Frames Page Unit F Deleting a Frame from a Frames Page (cont.)  Delete frame command

26Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Frame Properties  You can change the properties and behavior of a frames page and its frames  You can change the default frame name  You can set a different Web page to open in the frame when the frames page first opens  You can change the frame’s width and height  You can change the frame’s margins

27Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Frame Properties (cont.)  The frame margin is the amount of space between the inside border of the frame and the text or picture(s) in the frame  The default setting for a frame is to permit users to resize the frame in the browser by dragging the frame’s border with the pointer  You can turn off this option using the Frame Properties dialog box

28Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Frame Properties (cont.)  You can set the frames page so it does not display borders  There are three options for displaying the scroll bars in a frame: –If Needed –Never –Always

29Creating a Frames Page Unit F Setting Frame Properties (cont.)  Frame Properties dialog box

30Creating a Frames Page Unit F Summary  You can set the page to be displayed in a frame using the Set Initial Page button  You can create a new page to be displayed in a frame using the New Page button  You save new pages in frames the same way you save any new Web page

31Creating a Frames Page Unit F Summary  You can set multiple pages to open in a frame  A target frame is the frame in which to open a new Web page  You can split an existing frame into two frames  You can delete a frame from a frames page

32Creating a Frames Page Unit F Summary  You can change the properties and behavior of a frames page and its frames
