WALT use the internet to find information. WILF Use safe internet surfing skills How to narrow a search What to do if your find something inappropriate Choose websites strategically from a search engine result.

Fact or Opinion. Because anyone can publish anything, there is no guarantee that all the information you find on the internet is true or accurate. Internet users need to check a few important things before they accept what they are reading as fact.

Ask yourself these questions: Who is the website written for? Is it made for children, adults or researchers? Do you understand what you read? Who created the website? Is it a single author or an organisation? How do you know what the author says is true? Is there enough information to answer your question? Is the website up to date? How long ago was it updated?

Searching the Internet. The internet is a fantastic place to get information, but finding what you want can be the hardest part. To find information on the internet is called searching. One way to search is to use a search engine.

Can you name any search engines?

How a search engine works. Type the key words you would like to search for into a search box and then click “go” or “find”. The search engine will look for words that contain your search words and bring them up in a list. Some lists the sites, that are the most popularity, some in alphabetical order, some by frequency of keywords appearing Lots of search engines have sites that pay to be listed first!

Too much information. Sometimes when you search for something, millions of results will be found. You need to narrow down the search. First of all choose key words that say exactly what you want. Leave out all the little words you would normally put into a question. So, “How should I look after my pet hamster?” could be changed to “hamster care”. This search brings up better quality information telling you what you need to know.

Key words quiz. I want to find out about a holiday to Jamaica and which are the best beaches to visit. I want to find a game that will help me with my French numbers. I want to find out what the weather is like in London in April.

SMART Safe searching. Take care to spell correctly when typing in a search. Even a small typing error can bring up unwanted results. Report anything to an adult any information that makes me feel uncomfortable straight away. (In class minimise the screen then tell a teacher.) Check before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or mobile device or jeopardize our privacy. Never believe just one website – It might not be reliable.

I’d like to make a dalek cake Which site will be the most useful? The BBC is one of our trusted websites. Which other websites would you add to this list?

What if our trusted sites aren’t on the list? Why do we need to be careful about the information we find online? Anyone can make a website Some information online is opinion not fact Some websites are trying to sell us things

What are the clues to a good website? Who created the website? Have you heard of the company or the person? Is there lots of advertising on the website? Is the website trying to entertain, persuade or give us information?

You need to find: 1.A website with information about deadly snakes. 2.A website that gives you information about the World War II. 3.A website that gives information about the NASA trip to Mars with a robot. 4.A useful website to practice your times tables on. Over to you! Remember to be a good detective and look for clues of a good website…the website address, how it is written and how it looks!

When you search online remember to be a good detective! 1.Always click on the search UK pages option 2.Remember to narrow your search 3. Look at the search results carefully – some sites are not reliable!
