2 DAY 3: ECONOMIC PROSPERITY AND POLITICAL SCANDAL Transition to Modern American The 1920’s

3 Causes of Economic Prosperity: President Warren Harding’s “Return to Normalcy” (meaning life before WW I) and "America first" campaign encouraged industrialization and a strong economy, independent of foreign influence.

4 Causes of Economic Prosperity: Reduced taxes – tax burden of middle Americans decrease, while most lower income Americans were relieved of their tax burden altogether

5 Causes of Economic Prosperity: Stock Market was booming. Americans were buying on margin (only paying a down payment to buy stock…then pay the rest later) created quick wealth

6 Causes of Economic Prosperity: Improved mass production with the assembly line reduces the cost of consumer goods. Consumerism is a social and economic order that encourages the purchase of goods and services in ever-greater amounts. Mass consumerism encourages buying goods on credit (installment plans)

7 The Automobile Arrives Henry Ford – founder of Ford Motors, innovated the auto industry by using the assembly line and invented the Model T and Model A cars. Because Ford could mass produce cars, it made the car affordable to almost everybody in the U.S. The employment turnover was high at first. These jobs were boring but Ford raised wages to counter the turnover rate. The U.S. had led the world on assembly line production of the car.

8 Discussion Question Would you work a job that you absolutely hated but got paid really well? Why or Why not? Besides getting paid well, what motivated people to work jobs that they hated?

11 Discussion Question The U.S. by the 1920’s, The U.S. out produced Europe 3-4 times the amount of automobiles. Why do you think the U.S. led in production of cars over other countries? The U.S. was first use the assembly line on the production of cars.

13 Famous American Pilots and Aviators Glenn Curtiss – considered “The Father of Naval Aviation,” he was a pioneer in aviation.

14 Famous American Pilots and Aviators Charles Lindbergh – completed the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

15 Economic Issues and Political Scandal Because of high tariffs Britain and France had a hard time selling products in the U.S. which made it hard to pay back the U.S. the 10 billion dollars it borrowed during WWI. Tariffs- a tax on imported foreign goods. High tariffs were used to protect domestic or U.S. made products.

16 Economic Issues and Political Scandal President Warren Harding’s Presidency was plagued with controversy and scandal. Harding and his cabinet were accused with political corruption especially when the Teapot Dome Scandal became public. It led to the conviction of his cabinet member Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall. He became the first Cabinet member to be sent to prison. Teapot Dome Scandal – the scandal concerning the secret lease of oil rights to private companies from government-owned land in Wyoming during the Harding administration. Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall was found guilty of accepting bribes from oil companies.

17 Economic Prosperity and Political Scandal Harding dies of a heart attack and Calvin Coolidge takes over and helps restore the faith of the American people in the government again.

18 Economic Prosperity and Political Scandal U.S. industries flourish under Coolidge – Stock prices are rising and people are continuing to buy stock “on the margin” which created a bubble that was about to pop….but most Americans thought the American economy was invincible.

19 Critical Writing Question Day 3 Day 3: Henry Ford revolutionized the car industry by making the Model T car by assembly line, giving access to affordable cars to all Americans. How does the automobile impact American society and Urbanization?

21 Consumerism in a New Modern America A characteristic of the 1920’s is big economic growth. A large part of that growth was the emergence of modern consumerism. Consumerism was encouraged by advertisements. Today you will create an advertisement that exemplifies consumerism of the 1920’s for the Model T car.

22 You have 2 Choices! You can pick one of the following three types of advertisements to be graded on:  Create a story board for a 30 second silent video commercial.  Write a script for a radio commercial advertisement.
