Facts of the Roaring Twenties  The Roaring 20’s was a time of dramatic and political change.  Most people from the 20’s are familiar with the term “flapper”  A flapper is a young women with bobbed hair and short skirts. They drank, smoked, and were known for their “unlady like” actions.  Jazz music is mostly accredited to African Americans, but both black and white Americans are responsible for this outbreak  Jazz was found in Harlem, due to popularity  Two popular spectator sports in the U.S. were baseball and football.

Facts of the roaring twenties  In 1919, the 18th amendment, Prohibition, goes into effect and bans the buying and selling of alcohol.  Prohibition was supported by traditionalists, who believed that alcohol was the cause for America’s social and domestic issues.  Many Americans opposed Prohibition, mainly because it promoted organized crime.  The 21st amendment ended Prohibition.

Facts of the Roaring Twenties  The new era of progressivism caused a moral split between traditionalists and modernists.  Traditionalists preferred the peace and quiet of a small, rural town while modernists preferred the ever changing and improving city life.  Traditionalists tended to be heavily religious, which caused a new wave of fundamentalism to return America to its previously established morals and beliefs.  The Scopes Trial was the epitome of the moral clash between traditionalists and modernists. It involved a science teacher teaching evolution to his students, which traditionalists despised.  Writers in the Roaring Twenties that criticized American life were known as “The Lost Generation”.  The “new morality” of the Roaring Twenties was the new want of equality for all United States Citizens.

Facts about the roaring twenties  Two groups that were left out of the prosperity of the Roaring Twenties of farmers and black Americans.  The extreme innovation that emerged during this time was unable to spread to farmers, due to their rural lifestyle.  Due to racial prejudices, black men and women were usually also unable to partake in the luxuries that the Roaring Twenties provided.

Immigration in the roaring twenties -Immigration spiked in the U.S. between 1919 and 1921 due to the extreme amount of social and economic growth happening the United States. -However, in 1921, the Emergency Quota Act of 1921 was passed, which only allowed a certain number of people from each different nationality and ethnicity to immigrate to the United States. This caused immigration in the U.S. to dramatically decrease

The REd Scare During the Roaring Twenties -Due to the sudden influx of immigration in the United States, there was a growing paranoia of the possibility of communism and anarchism increasing in the U.S. -This caused the United States Department of Justice to begin raiding homes and businesses to arrest and deport radical leftists, in particular anarchists.

12. Working During the Roaring Twenties -Due to the Progressive Age in the United States, many workers wanted to unionize. However, many large corporations did not allow them to do this. -This stance against unionization and more caused thousands of protests to emerge all across the United States. -The large influx of new industries helped boost the United States economy.

13. KEllogg-Briad Pact of 1928 -The Kellogg-Briad Pact of 1928 was a treaty that outlawed war as an instrument of national policy. -Sixty-two different countries agreed to sign this treaty.
