Do Now: In your notebook, draw a map of your route from home to Muchin College Prep. Make sure to include the following: – Your home – Muchin – The route you take (roads, train lines, bodies of water, etc.) – Any other places of interest along the way (Dunkin Donuts, Chicago Theatre, etc.) 5 minutes

Do Now (Cont.): What did you just draw? A mental map! Now, identify and explain the following geographic terms on your map: – A compass rose – A place – A location – A site – A situation

Mr. Filie’s Route to School! From Logan Square, he walks to the Blue Line California stop, head southeast, and get off at the Washington stop. He then walks southeast towards Muchin. Place  Cozy Corner Diner Location  1 N. State St. Site  His apartment has a lot of shade, quiet, and surrounded by flat roads. Situation  Muchin is right down the street from the ABC building.

Today in AP Human Geography Aim  investigate how areas are unique and describe the four different types of regions by providing examples and analysis. Big Idea  Even though every place on Earth is unique, what makes places similar? How do we identify and describe places that are similar? That’s why we will be studying regions today! Homework  Read and complete corresponding parts of reading guide for pages 20-29 (Key Issue #3). Due Friday! (But start tonight! Read about Globalization!)

What are Regions?

Regions! An area of Earth defined by one or more shared distinctive characteristics is a region. In other words, regions are unique AREAS. But wait, there are different types!

Types of Regions Formal/Uniform Region An area of distinct similarities in one or several characteristics. Often created by governments to organize territory or established by using scientific data about a particular area (such as where people speak specific languages).

Types of Regions Functional/Nodal Region A region created by the interactions between a central point or “node” & surrounding locations. Often, when you travel further away from the “node”, you become less connected to the region. Businesses use these regions to distribute their products.

Types of Regions Vernacular/Perceptual Region An area defined by subjective opinions that reflect the feelings & images about key place characteristics. These regions are not based on data, and often change over time. Sometimes called “vernacular” region

Formal Region

Functional Region

Vernacular Region

Your Turn! With your neighbor(s), match the different pictures/descriptions with the correct type of region. When finished, check in with me! If you finish early, re-read pages 18-19. 5 minutes

What About Culture?! Geographers refer to culture when thinking about how each region on Earth is unique. Culture is the set of beliefs and traditions of a group of people. Means “to care for” in Latin. To care about – to adore or worship something. To take care of – to nurse or look after something (cultivate).

Chicago’s Culture! What do people care about (language, religion, ethnicity)? What do people take care of (material wealth  food, clothing, shelter, art, etc.)?
