4/14

Agenda: Do some research (start with procon.org if you don’t have a better resource) to find out the reasoning that people on “your side” of the argument use to support their point-of-view. Identify the best/ most convincing pro argument that you found in this research. Write one paragraph summarizing the reasoning presented in the research. Do not combine this paragraph with the pro argument paragraph you already wrote.

Example (partial paragraph): The most compelling argument in favor of citizens’ carrying concealed handguns is that doing so deters crime. Citing research conducted by economist and political commentator John Lott, Jr., Ph.D., Procon.org says states that upheld or encouraged concealed carry “reduced murders by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7%, [and] robbery by 3%” in 2000 (“Pro Right to Carry”).

How this “pro” paragraph relates to your other one Your researched “pro argument” paragraph could come either before or after your non-researched one in the final paper (where Y is your idea, and X and Z ideas come from research): Suggested transition for a scenario in which the researched pro paragraph comes before yours: “While the most frequently-cited reason in favor of concealed- carry is X, we should also consider Y”. Suggested transition for a scenario in which the researched pro paragraph comes after yours: “While Y is a strong ethical reason why citizens should have the right to conceal carry, others cite logical reasons X and Z.”

Make sure to… Keep track of your sources; I recommend to build your works cited page as you use sources. Use attribution tags like “according to” in order to signal to your reader that you are using information or ideas from a source. Put quotation marks around any information, ideas, or wording you get from a source. Purdue OWL is the best reference for citing sources correctly both in-text and on the works cited page. – https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/ https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/
