1 A collaborative research project involving: www.rcnde.ac.uk Research Centre in Non-destructive Evaluation For more information about RCNDE, contact Peter Thayer at: pthayer@eee.strath.ac.uk Research Centre in Non-destructive Evaluation RCNDE is an Engineering & Physical Science Research Council-sponsored collaboration between industry and academia to coordinate research into NDE technologies, and to ensure research topics are relevant to the medium to longer-term needs of industry. The EPSRC has committed £8m funding over five years to the centre, including an Engineering Doctorate scheme in NDE. Industrial and academic members together select longer-term core research topics, which are aimed at addressing industry’s strategic NDE needs over a 5 to 10-year horizon, and also targeted research projects to address specific industrial needs in the medium term. The founding academic members — Imperial, Strathclyde, Bath, Bristol, Nottingham and Warwick — encompass a broad range of technical disciplines, and additional academic collaborations ensure gaps in technology and expertise can be filled. Industrial membership is open to all organisations, and is primarily intended for industries in which NDE plays an important role for: ensuring the safety of structures, machinery and infrastructure minimising environmental risks and impacts of process plant and operations enhancing the reliability of components, equipment, systems and products. The NDE supply chain is a vital element for successfully transferring technological advances arising from university research to their eventual practical application in industry. The Centre aims to involve all parts of the NDE supply chain, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises and organisations offering training, consultancy, field services and hardware. Research portfolio Current strategic research and application-driven targeted research programmes address the future of NDE technology. This includes sensors, data capture and processing, and advanced automated and miniaturised delivery systems. All are aimed at underpinning the future of a wide range of industries spanning processing, manufacturing and infrastructure-based wide range of industries spanning processing, manufacturing and infrastructure-based industries. Research falls into these categories:  Strategic core research to develop new technologies to build long-term industrial strength  Portfolio of targeted research projects to meet ongoing application and development needs of industry  Collaborative research under EU & DTI initiatives  Engineering Doctorate research  Technology solutions (nearer-market sponsored projects) to be strongly driven by the industrial members Engineering Doctorate This is four-year doctorate combines advanced knowledge and professional training modules with company- based NDE research. Members sponsor students or staff to study towards this qualification whilst furthering a company’s specific NDE research and training interests. Industrial membership Full RCNDE membership attracts large NDE end-user businesses and organisations. Current full industrial members include: Rolls-RoyceAirbusBritish Nuclear Fuels BP E.ON British EnergySerco Assurance Alstom Power RWE npower Shell Petrobras Dstl HSE Associate membership is open to the NDE supply chain, whether in manufacturing, operations, or offering products or services.
