1. DIVISIONS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM is divided into two main divisions: the CNS and the PNS.

2. the PNS is made up of all the nerves that extend from the brain and spinal cord, these nerves are completely myelinated.

3. 1. Autonomic Nervous System: are nerves that control the action of muscles over which we have no conscious control ex: heart movements, digestive movements there are two antagonistic divisions of this system:

4. A. Sympathetic: prepares the body for Flight or Fight responses the effects this system has are similar to adrenalin but not as long lasting

5. B. Parasympathetic: has the opposite effects of the Sympathetic nerves

6. 2. Somatic Nervous System: is made up of nerves that are under conscious control, they control skeletal muscle, bones and the skin; these include both motor and sensory nerves

7. CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM is made up of the brain & spinal cord unlike the PNS, it is not completely myelinated and if damaged can not be repaired.

8. A. The Brain: is formed from a concentration of nerve tissue (association neurons) it is protected from damage by:

9. 1. The Skull: a layer of bone that prevents direct contact with brain tissue. 2. The Meninges: three protective membranes that lie between the brain and skull; also surround the spinal cord.

10. 3. Cerebrospinal Fluid: a fluid that circulates between the two inner meninge layers; it acts as a shock absorber and a transport medium for nutrients and wastes.

11. STS Technology: Spinal Tap used to extract fluid from the spinal cord to test for the presence of a bacterial infection like Meningitis

14. B. The Spinal Cord: carries sensory nerve messages towards the brain and motor nerve messages away from the brain
