Hi Class! It’s great to see you today No voice! You are so lucky ;) You have a number on a piece of paper, each group has a number on a pink post it. Match! Go!

Grammar You have the first 15 minutes of class to work on your grammar assignment – Pages 107-115 – Verb Tenses – You may work together…YAY!

Odyssey, Book 1 In each group, you are responsible for becoming an expert on two pages! You have 10 minutes to prepare an expert presentation. – Summary – Literary Devices – Favorite Quote – Say, Mean, Matter

My Comments & Questions Why does the narrator invoke the Muse? When does the story begin? Where is Odysseus? With whom? Greek “relationships” were MUCH different from our Puritanical roots. Loyalty was more emotional, than physical. (Wait until you’re married.)

You didn’t think that was all… Who is Odysseus’ son? Wife? What is happening in Ithaca? Explain the Zeus, Athena, Telemachus situation. Which two suitors rebuke Telemachus? What is your impression of Telemachus? Why are there suitors vying for Penelope’s hand?

Book Two Please read Book 2 ABBA style – A: read – B: summarize, offer an insight & a question – B: read – A: summarize, offer an insight & a question – Jot down notes in your book as you read

And Mrs. H just keeps talkin’ Who is Aegyptius? What does he praise about Telemachus? What is the tone of Telemachus’ speech? What is his objective? Explain the ruse Penelope concocted? – What does this show about her feelings for Odysseus?

Geeze! What symbolic images appear to indicate Odysseus’ return? Where is Telemachus going? Why? Athena disguises herself as whom? Why is Telemachus so confident?

Wow! This book really is awesome. What is the benefit to Homer starting this in medias res- or, in the middle of things? How would you describe Telemachus in Book 1? In Book 2? Describe the change? How is Athena described? What does this indicate about her character?

HOMEWORK Read Book 2 at home tonight, we’ll discuss in class tomorrow Online discussion due 11/8 by 8am
