RTT Analysis Workshop Synthesis: Data Gaps and Research Needs (Chapter 5) Presented by Keely Murdoch MaDMC Chair Yakama Nation

What is a ‘Data Gap’ ? Recovery goals – Monitoring measures progress Focus on populations of interest Spatial scale Collects data used to generate metrics – Many metrics are already being collected – Missing data used to generate the required metrics are ‘data gaps’

Summary of Key Management Questions MaDMC upper Columbia data gap assessment – Prioritize known data gaps – Framework to rate new data gaps Columbia Basin-wide RM&E Assessment – Means to fund some data gaps

Upper Columbia Data Gap Assessment Definition: a critical uncertainty that has not been addressed Framework to prioritize gaps – VSP parameters – Geographic scale – Use of information Tiered ranking Shared throughout the region

Critical Uncertainties and Gaps Fish Pop Status/trend VSP Hatchery Effectiveness Habitat Status/trend Habitat Effectiveness FCRPS BiOp NPCC F&W Program Fish Accords PUD HCPs & Settlement Agreements ESA Recovery Plans Current and Proposed RM&E Regional fisheries management objectives Columbia Basin Coordinated Anadromous Monitoring Strategy ESA

Current Progress Steelhead monitoring Relative reproductive success of hatchery fish Precision and accuracy of redd counts Genetic/demographic contribution of red- band rainbow trout to UCR steelhead.

What is still needed to answer key management questions S&T data from the Canadian Okanogan (Steelhead) Spatially balance genetic sampling program for Chinook and Steelhead Increased sample size for effectiveness monitoring Juvenile life-history and its connection to habitat use and survival

Summary Data gaps are dynamic Many critical gaps remain – Analysis of existing data – Collection of new data How to use existing data to answer key recovery/management questions More work needs to be done to integrate and interpret the ongoing stream of current data
