2 What is Prohibition? The 18 th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The Volstead Act (The law that accompanied the amendment.) Ratified on January 16, 1919. The U.S. went dry on January 17, 1920. Prohibition made it illegal to manufacture, import, sell, buy, or transport alcohol. The act did not prohibit the consumption of alcohol.

4 Unintended Consequences of Prohibition Decline of amusement and entertainment industries. Restaurants were no longer making profits. No more income from liquor taxes. Corruption of law enforcement. Increase in organized crime. Bootlegging.

5 The End of Prohibition Prohibition ended in 1933. It was repealed by the ratification of the 21 st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on December 5, 1933. Did you know? Yuengling Premium Beer (America’s oldest brewery) was delivered to the White House on December 6, 1933. This reminds the government that citizens were producing alcohol during prohibition regardless of it being illegal
