Warm-up: Concept: Ionic Bonding
2
Determine the product of each reaction. 1.Na + Cl ? 2.K + O ?
3
Determine the product of each reaction. 1.Na + Cl NaCl 2.K + O K 2 O Here is why: 1. Na +1 + Cl -1 NaCl ( These atoms join in a 1:1 ratio because a single Sodium atom can give a single Chlorine atom a single valence electron. The oppositely charged atoms of each then attract each other forming an ionic bond.) 2. K +1 + O -2 K 2 O ( In this reaction a single Potassium atom can give an Oxygen atom one valence electron. Each oxygen atom can gain two valence electrons, so it takes two Potassium atoms to give a total of two valence electrons to a single Oxygen atom. The resulting oppositely charged ions attract each other.)
