My opening title conforms to the genre of thriller. It is a conventional thriller and doesn’t really challenge the genre as I wanted to ensure it was typical of the thriller genre. My film takes inspiration from thriller films such as ‘Brick’ as it focuses around a group of teenagers who get caught up in a dangerous situation which is similar to ours as it mainly involves teenage actors and is about a dangerous situation. Also we took inspiration from the film ‘Collateral’ as the main character unwillingly gets involved in danger which is the same as our film.

This frame is a clear shot of the title of our film. We chose to incorporate the typical thriller colour of red. The red part of the word stands out as it is bold and eye catching, also red is used in thrillers to provoke emotions such as anger and make the audience link it to things such as blood as that is also red. We placed the title on the actual box to show that the title was chosen because of the main prop in the film. The title is ‘unhinged’ because a box has hinges and also because when someone is described as unhinged they are thought of as mentally unstable which we thought would make the audience feel on edge and know that there were going to be some crazy characters in our film.

The second frame is a clear pan of the setting of our opening title sequence. The shot is of the run down warehouse we used as the location of the antagonists house. The location is typical to the thriller genre as thriller films tend to be set in isolated locations and within urban settings, which is where ours is set. It is also a shot that is relevant to the thriller genre as is it creepy and dirty which suggests that the antagonist character may be the same.

The third shot is of one of the main characters clothing and prop they are holding. The clothing was chosen as it is typical of a teenager to wear clothes that feature in this opening title sequence and we did this to try and make it obvious to the audience what type of characters they were. On the other hand it is less conventional of typical thriller films as they are teenagers, who aren’t the usual type of characters that are used. The typical character types are people such as spies or villains or other characters that dress a certain way which is common in thriller films. The prop the character is carrying is a plastic bin bag and is an effective prop as it shows the audience that they aren’t professionals as they just have every day house hold items to help them steal things.

We did typical thriller style camera shots in our filming. They included shots such as extreme close ups and below the waste shots, which is shown in this frame, that ensured at no time in the opening title sequence the protagonists faces were shown, or the antagonists full face was shown. This was to keep the enigma of the characters which is typical of a thriller film. We did this by positioning the camera at certain angles and editing out all the shots where the characters faces were accidentally shown.

The title font and style we used was basic. We decided not to use serif style font as that was too fancy and swirly which is used more in films such as romantic ones. We instead thought it would be best to keep it typical of a thriller genre by keeping it blocked and basic as we thought that fit our quite simple story line. The colour was also basic, white, so it could show up in all the shots and wouldn’t draw the audiences eyes away from the scene.

The main aspects of the story line are all featured in our opening title sequence. The shot I chose was of just the box, which is shown at various points of the opening title and focused upon which hints at the fact it is going to be an important part of story line.

The way our opening title sequences shows what genre it is based on is classically shown in the shot I chose. That is a dark shot of a bird skeleton on a dirty floor. The shot shows it is going to have dark themes, as the animal is dead, and the dark lighting shows it is sinister which is typical of a thriller film.

The first shot of the characters occurs at the very beginning of the film. When all three are shown outside the house breaking into it. The fact this shot shows all three of the characters is important as it means the audience doesn’t get confused about how many characters there are later in the film. They are introduced doing something bad strait away by breaking into a house. This shows that it isn’t going to be a light hearted film as that sort of thing doesn’t happen in films of light hearted genres.

Our film was a gritty realistic low budget film which didn’t leave much room for special effects. The only special effects that occur in our opening title sequence come in the form of the titles. The shot I chose is of one of the characters swiping away some of the titles with their foot as they walked past. This was used to make the film flow better and was one of the most technical things that was involved.
