STUDENT SURVEY OF INSTRUCTION (SSI) INSTRUCTOR WORKSHOP SARAH GORDON, JAMES KNECHT & ANNETTE MOORE UNIVERSITY ASSESSMENT AND TESTING SESSION I: MONDAY, OCT. 5, 2015 SESSION II: THURSDAY, OCT. 29, 2015 SESSION III: WEDNESDAY, NOV. 4, 2015

WELCOME SSI Content/Questions Asked – No Changes Scaling Adjustments Now 1-5; previously 0-4 Selected System: Scantron’s Class Climate Pilot Process (College of Human Sciences/Stat. Dept.)

CLASS CLIMATE –FEATURES & BENEFITS Surveys can be completed from any Internet-connected device (computer, cell phone, tablet) Secure integration with Online Classroom (D2L) – prompts students to complete SSIs for all their courses Courses of all lengths/types can be surveyed (short/online/intercession/late-added) Greener – reduced paper use, less labor for mailing/packaging, no more lost packets Typed student comments easier to read

CLASS CLIMATE –FEATURES & BENEFITS (CONT.) Courses with multiple instructors can have separate surveys per instructor Students receive email confirmation of completion Comprehensive instructor reports delivered faster (2-3 days after the grading period closes) Advanced/custom reporting for colleges and departments System can deliver additional surveys online for the university

SSI FALL 2015 TIMELINE – IMPORTANT DATES November 10 – Provost’s SSI email to instructors. Email will include survey directions to share with students, SSI open/close dates, & best practice information for in-class delivery. November 18 – SSI opens for student access. Provost’s SSI email to students with directions and requesting completion. December 1 – Provost reminder email to students. December 4 – SSI closes for student access at 11PM CST. December 7-11 – Final Exam Week December 15 – Grading period closes December 17 – Instructors receive their individual course SSI Reports via email (minimum 3 student responses). 2+ Weeks

INSTRUCTOR REPORTS & SURVEY SYSTEM Emailed PDF Instructor Report o Delivered 2-3 Days After Grades Close o Received Before Next Semester Begins Sample Instructor Report System Demonstration

INSTRUCTOR BEST PRACTICES Communicate Value, Security, and Importance o Communicate often and in multiple ways (email, D2L, verbally in class) o Individual responses are anonymous and instructors do not receive reports until after grading period closes o Stress importance of survey results and how you use them to improve Face-to-Face Instructors Encouraged to Dedicate Class Time o Inform students ahead of time to bring Internet-connected devices o List date on syllabus o Provide time at the BEGINNING of class period so students don’t rush feedback or leave early

ONLINE SURVEY CONCERNS Are Response Rates Lower With an Online Survey? o Sometimes, but not always. Typically response rates fall when instructors do nothing to encourage student participation. If you forget—they forget! Providing multiple reminders and class time encourages students to complete the survey, leading to similar response rates as the paper survey. o Sometime rates go up—students who miss class can still complete the survey during the 2 week survey period. The system also prompts students to complete surveys on all their classes—when they finish one survey, it offers quick links to survey their other courses until all are complete. Won’t Lower Response Rates Affect My Scores? o Many instructors fear fewer responses means mostly “outliers” (students who really like/dislike them) will complete the survey. A study of course evaluations at UCLA suggests such biases do not appear, even in smaller sample sizes. Students of all opinions respond at similar rates as with paper.study of course evaluations at UCLA
