AGENDA – 10/6/15  Take out your journal and take out your outline from yesterday! Bell-Ringer: Membrane Finish Plasma Membrane Notes Play Doh Membrane!

Bell-ringer: 10/6/15 1.Describe what the plasma membrane is and where it can be found (where in/on the cell and what types of cells)? 2.What is the job of the plasma membrane?

2.1 Section Objectives – page 35 Identify the structure and function of the cell’s plasma membrane Today’s Objective:

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 There are watery environments inside and outside the cell. Therefore the phospholipid layers look like a sandwich, with the head ends facing the watery environments they are attracted to, and the tail ends being the inside of the sandwich, away from the water. PLASMA MEMBRANE

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 The cholesterol prevents the fatty acid chains of the phospholipids from sticking together. Cholesterol Molecule PLASMA MEMBRANE

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 PLASMA MEMBRANE Transport Protein Proteins also span the entire plasma membrane. Transport Proteins help the membrane be selectively permeable. They move ‘selected’ substances through.

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 PLASMA MEMBRANE Plasma membrane Transport protein

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 The fluid mosaic model describes the plasma membrane as a flexible boundary of a cell. The phospholipids move within the membrane. PLASMA MEMBRANE

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 “Fluid” because it moves like currents in a lake. PLASMA MEMBRANE “mosaic” because the proteins that are found throughout the membrane create a mosaic-type pattern on the surface.

PLASMA MEMBRANE PLAYDOH INSTRUCTIONS 1.You will make a playdoh model of the plasma membrane. Person A.- is responsible for creating 6 phospholipids- make a phospholipid bi-layer with 3 on the top and 3 on the bottom. Person B.- is responsible for making a transport protein and adding it to the phospholipid bi-layer. Person C.- is responsible for making 2 cholesterol molecules and adding them to the bi-layer. 2.Using a pen or pencil: Person A.- Underneath the cell membrane model, write the definition of the plasma membrane and in which cells it can be found. Person B.- Label the transport protein and write it’s function. Person C.- Label the cholesterol molecules and write their function. 3. On the colorful printer paper, away from the model: Person A- Compare the function of the plasma membrane to something else in the world that has the same function. Person B- Describe what would happen if the transport proteins were not working properly. Person C- Describe what would happen if the cholesterol molecules were not working properly. Drawings of the plasma membrane can be found in Chapter 7.2
