2 What is phonics? Phonics is all about using skills for reading and spelling. Learning phonics will help your child to become better at reading and writing.

5 How is it taught at St Peter’s? Every child in EYFS and KS1 is taught phonics each day for 25/30 minutes. Fast paced Based on repetition Games, rhymes and songs.

6 Phases Phase 1- tuning into sounds Phase 2- learning phonemes to read and write simple words Phase 3- learning the long vowel phonemes and digraphs Phase 4- consonant clusters and spelling words Phase 5- alternative digraphs for reading Phase 6- spellings and learning rules of spelling.

8 Terminology Phonemes: the smallest unit of sound that are found in a word. Grapheme: the spelling of the word ‘th’ Digraph: two letters that make one sound. Trigraph: three letters that make one sound CVC: consonant, vowel consonant, words. Segmenting: breaking the word up into its sounds. Blending: putting words together to read a word. Tricky words: words that cannot be decoded.
