2. What is phonics? Phonics is all about using skills for reading and spelling. Learning phonics will help your child to become better at reading and writing.

5. How is it taught at St Peter’s? Every child in EYFS and KS1 is taught phonics each day for 25/30 minutes. Fast paced Based on repetition Games, rhymes and songs.

6. Phases Phase 1- tuning into sounds Phase 2- learning phonemes to read and write simple words Phase 3- learning the long vowel phonemes and digraphs Phase 4- consonant clusters and spelling words Phase 5- alternative digraphs for reading Phase 6- spellings and learning rules of spelling.

8. Terminology Phonemes: the smallest unit of sound that are found in a word. Grapheme: the spelling of the word ‘th’ Digraph: two letters that make one sound. Trigraph: three letters that make one sound CVC: consonant, vowel consonant, words. Segmenting: breaking the word up into its sounds. Blending: putting words together to read a word. Tricky words: words that cannot be decoded.
