1 Welcome Back Scientists! Today: 1. Return Electromagnets Inquiry Scores 2. Discuss the Revision Process 3. Interactions between permanent and Electromagnets: Building a Motor 4. More on Magnets and Electricity

2 Making an Electric Motor Follow the Instructions Carefully!!

3 We Know That Electric Currents Produce Magnetic Forces  So moving electrons create a magnetic force  And magnetic fields can interact to create motion (motors!)  But what about the opposite? What is the effect of magnetic force on electrons?  http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/legacy/faraday http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/legacy/faraday  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yA8gZM3fghc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yA8gZM3fghc  So magnetic fields can cause electrons to move in a wire  And electrons moving in a wire is called…  Electricity!!! – so the reverse process of a motor GENERATES electricity (what do you think we call that?

4 So…  Electricity creates magnetism which we use to create motors that change electrical energy into kinetic energy  And kinetic energy can be used to move magnets around coils of wire  This creates a current in the wire  The current in the wire can be transmitted and used by other things (like motors)
