Renaissance Science What helped the development of science in the Renaissance (14 th – 16 th centuries)?

The invention of a movable type printing press Renaissance Science How books are made? What’s the difference here?

Gutenberg’s Printing Press Gutenberg invented a movable type of printing press in 1438. Printers in other countries soon learned to use this new invention. Books could be printed more quickly and their price fell. People could now afford to buy books. Ideas and learning spread easily when more people read books. People increased their interest in science.

Church influence declined In Middle Age, people accepted what the Church told them. The Great Schism reduced people’s faith to the Church. (mentioned before) In Renaissance people questioned Church beliefs and used scientific ways to solve problem.

His achievement One of his achievements in science was about his discovery in astronomy. Before this discovery, the Church told the people that the earth was the centre of the universe.the earth Yet Copernicus found out that the sun, and not the earth, was the centre of the universe. http://www.ied.edu.hk/invent/inventor/invent or.htmlthe sun http://www.ied.edu.hk/invent/inventor/invent or.html Was his discovery ‘revolutionary’?

Galileo ( 伽利略 ) (1564 - 1642) Study the story of Galileo in textbook

Look at the picture. Can you tell one of the achievements of Galileo in science?

Galileo’s discovery He discovered that things of the same shape and size but with different weights fell to the ground at the same speed.

What is it? What importance did this invention have? Who would find it useful? He also made the world’s first telescope.

He discovered the pendulumpendulum theorytheory, which was later used by people to make clocks and watches. Look at the picture. Can you tell another achievement of Galileo in science?

Galileo’s sin? The Church believed in Aristotle’s theory that the sun moved round the Earth. Galileo supported Copernicus’ sun-centred idea. Galileo was persecuted by the Church for this because he did not accept his ‘fault’. He was punished for holding different ideas. Does this happen now?
