Area & Perimeter An Introduction
2
AREA The amount of space inside a 2-dimensional object. Measured in square units cm 2, m 2, mm 2 Example: 1 cm 2 cm Area = 1cm x 2cm = 2 cm 2 The units are squared... why ?
3
Perimeter The distance around a two dimensional object. Measured in ‘normal’ units eg. cm, m, mm 10cm 8 cm 10cm Perimeter = 10cm + 10cm + 8cm = 28 cm
4
Some shapes have there own formulas for area
5
Rectangle b a Area of a rectangle = ab (length x width) Perimeter = 2a + 2b = 2(a + b)
6
Triangle Area = ½ bh ( ‘h’ is the vertical height) h b b
7
Now Pair These Up Area of square with The distance around a 2-D shape sides 4cm each Area of triangle, 16 cm 2 base = 8cm height = 2cm Perimeter is defined as 9 cm Perimeter of square with The space inside a 2-D object sides 4cm each Area is defined as 16 cm Perimeter of an equilateral 8 cm 2 triangle, length of sides = 3cm
8
Check Your Answers Perimeter of an equilateral triangle, length of sides = 3cm Area of square with sides 4cm each 16 cm 2 Area of triangle, base = 8cm height = 2cm 8 cm Perimeter is defined as The distance around a 2-D shape Perimeter of square with sides 4cm each The space inside a 2-D object 16 cm Area is defined as 9 cm
