2 Japan’s Pacific Campaign Divide you sheet into 3 columns. Label the left column “event”, middle column “what”, right column “significance” In groups of 3-4 use book/notes to describe the following battles and state their significance: 1.Bombing of Pearl harbor 2.Fall of Southeast Asian colonies 3.Doolittle’s raid on Japan 4.Battle of the Coral Sea 5.Battle of Midway 6.Battle of Guadalcanal

3 Japan’s Pacific Campaign 1.Bombing of Pearl harbor Event: JAP launched surprise attack, sinking or damaging almost the entire US Pacific Fleet Significance: US declared war on Japan 2.Fall of Southeast Asian colonies E: Through a planned series of attacks in the Pacific, Japan seized control of rich European colonies S: helped JAP replenish depleted resources 3.Doolittle’s raid on Japan E: As revenge for Pearl Harbor, US sent 16 B-25 bombers to bomb Japanese cities S: showed that JAP could be attacked; raised US morale 4.Battle of the Coral Sea E: JAP attack on Port Moresby as intercepted; JAP & US fleets fought to a draw S: introduced a new kind of naval warfare using only airplanes; stopped JAP Expansion southward 5.Battle of Midway E: US carrier planes defeated JAP fleet set to attack a key US airfield on Midway Island S: reversed the tide of war in the Pacific 6.Battle of Guadalcanal E: US marines and Australian troops seized JAP airfield and fought on land & sea for control of the island S: forced JAP to abandon island of Guadalcanal; began MacArthur’s island-hopping counterattack
