FRACTION BASICS DAY 1 Because unicorns laugh when you have extra work

SO WHAT ON EARTH IS A FRACTION? A fraction (from Latin: fractus, "broken") represents a part of a whole or, more generally, any number of equal parts. When spoken in everyday English, a fraction describes how many parts of a certain size there are, for example, one-half, eight-fifths, three-quarters. In other words… A fraction is a kind of number that we can use to represent parts of a whole, whole numbers or more than one whole. You can represent a lot of different numbers with fractions, but not all numbers!!! In other words, fractions are like the monsters under your bed. You don’t really know what they look like, but your sure they exist, and they are probably going to eat you when you’re not looking…Sweet dreams!

SO HOW DO FRACTIONS WORK? Numerator Denominator This represents how many equal sized pieces it takes to make one whole This represents how many of the denominator sized pieces you have This is the division bar. It represents…division….well duh….DIVISION bar!

SO HOW DO FRACTIONS WORK? 3 4 This number four tells us that it will take four equal sized pieces to make one whole number… that’s very important… even more important than wearing clean socks This number tells you that you have three of those 4 pieces you saw a second ago in the denominator number This division bar tells you that you can also think of this fraction as 3 ÷ 4.

HOW MANY PIECES DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ONE WHOLE? 3 4 This number four tells us that it will take four equal sized pieces to make one whole number…

HOW MANY PIECES DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ONE WHOLE? 15 10 This number ten tells us that it will take ten equal sized pieces to make one whole number…

HOW MANY PIECES DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ONE WHOLE? 9 13 This number thirteen tells us that it will take thirteen equal sized pieces to make one whole number…

HOW MANY PIECES DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ONE WHOLE? 6 1034 This number one thousand thirty four tells us that it will take one thousand thirty four equal sized pieces to make one whole number…

HOW MANY PIECES DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ONE WHOLE? 97 x This number x tells us that it will take x equal sized pieces to make one whole number…

HOW MANY PIECES DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ONE WHOLE? 6 1 This number one tells us that it will take one equal sized piece to make one whole number…

PARTNER PALAVER: COULD THIS BE A MODEL OF THE FRACTION BELOW? WHY OR WHY NOT? 3 4 Fractions deal with breaking things up into EQUAL SIZED PIECES, just like you do in regular division when you break something into equal sized groups These pieces ARE NOT equal sized!!!

DRAW A MODEL WHICH COULD REPRESENT THE FRACTION BELOW 3 4

DRAW A MODEL TO REPRESENT THE FRACTION BELOW 2 8

5 8

DRAW A MODEL WHICH COULD REPRESENT THE FRACTION BELOW 1 4

BRAIN BREAK!!!

SO WHAT IS THE FRACTION THAT THIS MODEL REPRESENTS 0 4

5 8

3 10

SO WHAT IS THE FRACTION THAT THIS MODEL REPRESENTS 7 10

SO WHAT IS THE FRACTION THAT THIS MODEL REPRESENTS 54 4

SO WHAT IS THE FRACTION THAT THIS MODEL REPRESENTS 16 5 It’s not a valid fraction model because all of the pieces are not equal sized.

SO WHAT IS THE FRACTION THAT THIS MODEL REPRESENTS 54 36 2 3

SO WHAT IS THE FRACTION THAT THIS MODEL REPRESENTS 3 2 6 9

SO WHICH ONE IS RIGHT? 54 36 6 9 2 3

SO WHAT ARE EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS? Equivalent fractions are fractions that are different names for the same models.
