2 Prejudice--Heading 1.a. An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts. b. A preconceived preference or idea. 2. The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgments or convictions. 3. Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion. 4. Detriment or injury caused to a person by the preconceived, unfavorable conviction of another or others.

3 Five Levels of Prejudice Avoidance Verbal Discrimination Violence Genocide

4 Avoidance  This is when a person or persons avoid someone because of how they look, their race, religion, etc. *A person who avoids will not talk to, sit next to, or even look at someone they are prejudiced against.

5 Verbal This is when someone actually says something against another person because they are different. Ex: racial slurs.

6 Discrimination This is when someone actually does something to another person due to prejudice. Person does something discriminatory, like refusing service, refusing a job, etc. to a person of a different group.

7 Violence When prejudice turns physically aggressive. Often started by racial slurs or put downs. Instead of discriminating and causing someone mental, emotional or financial harm, the person(s) takes the next step and purposely causes the victim physical harm.

8 Murder/Genocide When prejudice causes a person or entire groups of people to be killed. Individuals or a gropu destroys/murders another group. Not only is the group causing physical harm to the other group of people, they actively try to eliminate them.

11 Exit Slip—pick one—5-6 sentences What have you learned about prejudice? How are the 5 levels related? What surprised you, made you angry, or made you stop and think? Use complete sentences and write on the back of your notes. Your grade will be the notes and your response.
