2 History of Halloween Halloween is to be though to originate with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, November 1 st was the day to honor all of the saints and the martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. This day was designated by Pope Gregory III. The evening before was called All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween turned into what we know it as today. http://www.history.com/topics/halloween/history-of- halloween http://www.history.com/topics/halloween/history-of- halloween By: Morgan Tolbert

13 We recently asked our teachers about their favorite Halloween memories! Here’s what we got! Mrs. Givens - “I remember one year for Halloween I was so excited to dress up as Casper the Ghost, but when the Halloween finally came, I put the mask over my face, but then, I realized I couldn’t see anything, so that didn’t turn out well! I also love Halloween because to me, it’s like celebrating candy!” Mrs. Wimberly - “My favorite thing about Halloween was the haunted house in downtown, I thought the haunted house was AWESOME! Mr. Hawthorne - My favorite memory from Halloween was going to the Halloween carnivals with my family.” Mrs. Bell - “I loved dressing up for Halloween, my brother and I would always dress up together.” Mrs. Allen - “My favorite memory from Halloween was when my sister had gotten the chicken pox, so we couldn’t go trick-or-treating. My sister, my grandma, and I stayed home and had fondue as we watched Halloween Disney movies!” By Connie Weng and Sofia Insley
