1 Investigation 7: Plant Reproduction FOSS: Diversity of Life Contrasting Cases Revised 08/25/09

Create two piles… Take a few minutes and create two piles with your cards. The cards in each pile must have something in common. Write down on your worksheet what similarities your cards share. Contrasting Cases 2

Multi-Cellular Needs light for energy Needs water for survival Requires two parents coming together to produce offspring Requires a sperm and egg to replicate Offspring are a combination of both parents Need to reproduce to keep species around Red Rose (Plant)

Multi-cellular Needs food for energy Needs water for survival Requires two parents coming together to produce offspring Requires a sperm and egg to replicate Offspring are a combination of both parents Need to reproduce to keep species around Lion

Multi-Cellular Needs food for energy Needs water for survival Requires two parents coming together to produce offspring Requires a sperm and egg to replicate Offspring are a combination of both parents Need to reproduce to keep species around Human

Unicellular Does not need light for energy Needs water for survival Requires only one parent to produce offspring Offspring are identical to parent Need to reproduce to keep species around Bacteria: Staph Aureus

Unicellular Does not need light for energy Needs water for survival Requires only one parent to produce offspring Offspring are identical to parent Need to reproduce to keep species around Paramecium

Discuss Think about how you organized your cards. –Could you have separated them another way? How so? Activity Title8

What is reproduction? Take a few minutes and write down all that you know about reproduction. –Why is reproduction important? –Do all organisms need to reproduce? –Do all organisms reproduce the same way? 9

10 So, what’s the difference? In this activity, your task is to discover how organisms reproduce differently. Sort the five cards you have been given into two piles based on how they reproduce. –Match each organism to either the Sexual Reproduction card or the Asexual Reproduction card.

11 Comparing two different types of reproduction Think about the following questions as you fill out your worksheet. How are your two piles different? What do the rose, cat, and human all have in common? What do the bacterium and paramecium have in common? What do your two piles have in common?

12 Concluding Discussion Based on these cards, describe the characteristics of the two different types of reproduction. –How is sexual reproduction different from asexual reproduction? –What do both sexual and asexual reproduction have in common?

Asexual Reproduction  A form of reproduction for organisms  Requires only one parent to produce offspring  Offspring are identical to parent

Sexual Reproduction  Is a form of reproduction for organisms  Requires two parents coming together to produce offspring  Requires a sperm and egg to replicate  Offspring are a combination of both parents
