3 INTRODUCTION Chirp-chirp, What’s that sound? That’s the sound of a cicada looking for its mate. But you might not recognize them because they spend most of their life underground. Come with me to find out more!

4 WHAT DOES THE CICADA LOOK LIKE?  All cicadas have large bodies and six legs.  Their wings are transparent and very large.  They have two large eyes and three small eyes in between.  Adults have four wings that they hold folded over their back.

5 WHAT IS THE CICADA’S HABITAT?  Cicadas live all over the world.  They live underground most of the time.  Adult cicadas live above ground on grass or trees.

6 WHAT DOES THE CICADA EAT AND HOW DOES IT HUNT?  Babies stay alive by eating sap from tree roots.  Adults mostly eat tree sap.

7 ALL ABOUT CICADA BABIES.  Their babies start out as tiny wingless larvae.  The wingless larvae are called nymphs.  Nymphs stay alive by eating tree sap.  Nymphs stay underground for 2 to 17 years.

8 FUN FACTS  There are many cicadas in the world.  Nymphs burrow up to 2 feet into the ground.  Adults can be up to 2.25 inches long.  Mama cicadas can lay between 400 and 600 eggs at a time.  Nymphs stay underground for 2 to 17 years.
