5 How many brothers and sisters have you got at home in your families? There were 23 students asked. All together they have 49 brothers and sisters at home. So in every family there are about two brothers and sisters, so the families have about three children in total. This is more than average in Germany!

6 Historical and geographical factors There are many historical and geographical factors which have influence on the families: Let´s have a look at two remarkable changes in the history of Germany: During the Second World War many families lost their young men. So the women often were alone at home with their children. When Germany West and East were united, many people from the East went to the West, because there was much more work. Especially the younger ones moved to West Germany because of the better situation of employment. So in East Germany mainly the older people stayed.
