Animals including Humans Year 4 Lesson 2 LI: To be able to identify and classify carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

Input What is your diet? What should a human eat to remain healthy?

Why do animals need to eat? Animals, including humans, can not make their own energy like plants do. They get their energy through the food they eat. This energy is needed for movement, growth and repair.

Not all animals eat the same things. What is different about what these animals eat?

Classifying animals according to what they eat Carnivores: – Carnivores eat meat which they usually have to hunt to catch. A lion is a carnivore as it hunts to catch other animals such as zebra, antelope or buffalo. Some insects are carnivores such as the ladybird as it eats aphids. Herbivores: – Herbivores only eat plant material. This could be leaves, plants, flowers, fruits or wood. Horses, rabbits and slugs are examples of herbivores. Omnivores: – Omnivores eat both plants and meat. Examples of omnivores are chickens as they eat both seeds and worms. Another example is the chimpanzee which eats fruits, leaves, seeds as well as ants, bird eggs and fish.

Activity Use books and the internet to find different animals for the 3 different categories e.g. Carnivore Lion Ladybird (aphids) Eagle Herbivore Rabbit Horse Snail Omnivore Chicken (seeds, worms) Black bear Pig Challenge: Can you find out what food that animal eats

Plenary What category do humans fall into?
