Nekton- the swimmers

Three Different Types of Nekton:
Chordates- Chordates are the largest group of nektons and have bony cartilage. This group includes bony fish, whales, sharks, turtles, dolphins, marine reptiles, marine birds, and seals. Mollusks- Nektons that include animals like squid and octopus. Arthropods- Nektons that include animals like shrimp, which are mostly bottom dwelling animals.

Fish Have bony skeletons Benthic- those that live near the bottom
Pelagic- those that have no connection to the bottom

Bony Fish Examples Gopher Rockfish

Black And Yellow Rockfish

Blenny

Clownfish

Puffer Fish : Hydrocynus vittatus

Flounder

Abyssal Types

Angler fish

Sharks and Rays have skeletons made of cartilage

Zebra shark

Marine Mammals Regulate their body temperature Feed their young milk
Have fur at some time during their life history

Marine Reptiles Don’t regulate their internal temperature
Lay eggs on land

Marine Birds

All About Marine Birds Marine birds do not get wet when they enter the water. A preening gland secretes waxes and fats that a bird spreads throughout its feathers in order to make itself waterproof/insulated. Many marine birds have salt glands, which concentrate salt from blood in an area near the sinuses. The bird then can rid itself of excess salt by "sneezing" the salt out. The majority of the fresh water that marine birds need comes from their prey.

Molluscs

All About Molluscs Very soft-bodied invertebrates (no spine)
Some of the most well-known mollusks (like the octopus, for example) have no shells at all Many mollusks have a muscular foot that they use for motion.

Arthropods

All About Arthropods The Subphylum Crustacea has about 50,000 species of lobsters, crabs, shrimp, barnacles, brine shrimp and others. Anthropods have a segmented body, and an exoskeleton.
