3 What is a communicable disease?  Spreads from person to person.  You can catch it from someone or something else.

4 What are the most coming communicable diseases?  Colds  Ear infections  Eye infections  Diarrhea

5 Why communicable diseases spread so easily among children?  LOTS OF TOUCHING!

6 Diseases are spread by germs -In feces -In coughing (colds, chicken pox) -In direct contact (touching) -In blood and bodily fluids Sometimes cuts and sores

7 How can you prevent/cut down on the spread of germs?

8  Wash hands after each diapering, after each kleenex/runny nose, before snack, after using the toilet  Sanitize diaper changing area and change paper for EACH child  Use disposable items like paper towels  Diapers go in lined garbage can  Wear gloves whenever changing diapers and coming in contact with blood  Dispose of gloves and bloody materials in lined can, wash hands, sanitize area’  Sanitize/wash toys and surfaces in area

9 Glove Activity  Demo how to put on gloves and remove them  Directions are in 2a-3 of your book

10 Put on gloves  Try to get the gloves off without getting the syrup anywhere else….  GO

11 Get into a circle  Throw the ball to each other and list off one time that kids should wash their hands at Tiny Tigers

12 90% of germs can with washed off with proper hand washing  Look at this light to see the “germs” on your hand

13 Read page 2a-4  Wet your hands with clean running water(warm or cold) and apply soap  Rub your hands together and make a lather  Make sure you scrub the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails

14  Continue rubbing your hands for AT LEAST 20 seconds. Hum “happy birthday” or the “alphabet” from the start to the end.  Rinse your hands well under running water  Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry

16 What about times when you absolutely can’t wash your hands? What should you do?

20 When should toys and equipment be sanitized?

21 Toys and equipment should be sanitized  At the start of the day, before and after serving food, and after the day  After a toy has been put in a child’s mouth

24 Diseases and symptoms  Each of you had a disease, write down symptoms of that disease, when a new song plays crumble it up and throw it to someone else.  Chicken pox  Fever  Flu  Lice  Pink eye  Ring worm  Strep Throat

25 Look at page 2a-9  What do you do when you see these illnesses?  When can the child go back to school?

26 What is a way to cut down on childhood diseases besides hand washing and clean environments?

27 Immunizations  What is required?  poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, mumps, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, haemophilus influenzae B, hepatitis B, and varicella (chickenpox)

28 How do parents opt out?  In accordance with the Child Care Act, a parent may request that immunizations, physical examinations and/or medical treatment be waived on religious grounds. A request for waiver shall be in writing, signed by the parent or parents, and kept in the child's record.  Day care must keep list of children who don’t have immunizations

29 Wellness  Stress, conflict, and trauma can effect physical and emotional well being

30 Stress  Young children experience it  Common indicators can include regression, low self esteem, extreme fears, physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach aches  Responses are unique and can be inconsistent Cant verbalize, watch behaviors and drawings

31 Promoting wellness In groups pass out cards, but don’t share Have one person at a time draw what is on their card on the dry erase board and guess until all the cards are gone
