1 Inclusion & Introduction Programming Making sailing accessible to all Opportunities for your club to increase community interest & participation Friday, October 29 th, 2010 (1:50 pm) Overview of some participation / introduction programs taking place to successfully recruit and retain persons into our sport. What these programs are and their outcomes of both increased participation through new members and persons returning for more programming: Mobile Programs for persons in communities and remote areas who may not be members of clubs First Nations Persons with a Disability - Children and Adults Women and Girls Elementary and Secondary School Field Trips

Mobile Programs for persons in communities and remote areas who may not be members of clubs MOSS – BC Sailing New communities New participants Ability to test the market Leaving legacy Financially very strong

First Nations First Nations Sailing Lessons – BC Sailing Great community service Excellent partnerships with clubs on first nations land Funding available Great sea traditions

Persons with a Disability - Children and Adults Able Sail integrated program - as part of a Club Learn to Sail Program – Central Okanagan Sailing Association (COSA) Integrated into Adult LTS, School Program, and summer lesson program Participants are couples, siblings, friends – using Martin 16s and an Access Dinghy Necessary to be flexible with price, schedule, and assigned instructors and volunteers as needed Our experience shows that people both able-bodied and with a disability enjoy sailing as a sport – but also as a social and recreational opportunity – come back if they have fun with their friends Access Dinghy in the youth summer lesson program

Women and Girls Women’s Keelboat Racing – Kelowna Yacht Club Monday night Women’s Keelboat race series (2 months each year) Started as a training night in 2007 when hosting the CYA Women’s National Keelboat Championship Small keen committee created the racing/training Monday series Supported by the race fleet – great training for new crew Over 3 years - 10 new women skippers Also established Annual Okanagan Valley Women’s Championship Increased number of ladies signing up for the adult learn to sail programs Over 50 ladies participated this season

Elementary and Secondary School Field Trips School Program – Central Okanagan Sailing Association (COSA) History - 20 years – 1751 students this summer (35 PWAD) Equipment – Flying Juniors, Hobie Getaway, Access Dinghy, Martin 16 Program – May and June – Monday – Friday from 9 am – 2 pm Target Audience - Grade 4 – 12 One class per day – a school Field Trip – by school bus or city transit Benefit - the kids in the community aware that sailing lessons are available and affordable for them and many return for lessons in the summer
