4. 4 Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Results Section There needs to be in METHODS which countries satisfied WHO ILI Selection Criteria – and which did NOT! For those countries using “other criteria”, some broad categories defining their selection criteria. Make sure weekly data is compared with weekly data, and monthly data compared with monthly data: comparing mangos to mangos and papaya to papaya. Too much data in TABLE 1 – possibly strike No. of Consultations – and better use of graphics to present data – especially regional trends. After analysis, if data by region (Mekong, Singapore/Malaysia, etc) is similar, consider aggregating graphics. Increase demographic description to include gender – and TABLE 2 only show age data for three countries. Use a single format concerning age, in describing SARI, ARI, and Virological Data. Need some discussion (TOP of page 4) regarding seasonality of Northern, Southern, and Tropical Zones – maybe in one graphic presentation showing seasonality in each Zone.

Also, possibly presenting again, using northern, southern, and tropical zone groupings in one FIGURE! An introduction in which seasonality retrospectively is reflected by an example from northern, southern, and tropical zones (e.g. China, Australia, Singapore), for graphic presentation for the last 10 to 15 years – with arrow pointing to 2008 – and below the same for a much larger grouping beginning in 2008. This is to give a historical perspective, and make better sense of seasonality from just three years of data – during a pandemic!

6. 6 Emerging Disease Surveillance and Response (ESR) WHO Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) Discussion Section Need to highlight that this period of collection was during a Pandemic. Need to discuss comparison between ILI and virological data. Allude to distribution and vaccine policy needs to be discussed. Case definitions: to countries following WHO criteria have better predictive value than those that used “other”.
