2 D ISSECTION S AFETY R ULES Do not engage in horseplay! Wear safety goggles and gloves in case of chemical spills. Remove any contact lenses so chemicals cannot be trapped in your eyes by them. Wear closed toed shoes and tie hard back. No eating or drinking in the lab during the dissection.

3 D ISSECTION S AFETY R ULES Pin the specimen to be dissected securely in the dissecting pan or tray. Never dissect while holding the specimen in your hand(s). Hold the scalpel like a pencil. Point sharp objects or tools away from yourself and others. Always cut with a downward motion. Do not use excess force when working with a sharp instrument such as a scalpel. Use dissecting scissors instead of a scalpel whenever possible. It tends to cut more efficiently for most work and is less dangerous to use. Never use scalpels for cartilage or bones.

4 D ISSECTION S AFETY R ULES All parts of the specimen should remain in the dissection tray at all times. All parts of the specimen should be returned to the teacher for disposal. Always clean and dry all lab instruments with soap and water before returning them to the appropriate containers.
