Bacillus rod-shaped, Gram-positive or variable, spore-forming, aerobic or facultatively anaerobic. The genus includes thermophilic and psychrophilic, acidophilic and alkalophilic, freshwater and halophilic bacteria that utilize a wide range of carbon sources for heterotrophic growth or grow autotrophically.
