Catalyst 1.Set up your Cornell notes by: a)Putting the heading (Metric Conversions) at the top left b)Gluing the notes on the right side. 2.Answer the catalyst questions on your notes

Objectives SWBAT: Articulate six different prefixes scientists use with standard units. Convert between various units through practice.

Agenda Catalyst Metric system basics Converting between units Practice Summary

Metric System Basics Kilo (k) hecto (h) deca (D) Base Units meter gram Liter second deci (d) centi (c) milli (m) Units get smaller Units get larger

Metric System Basics The three prefixes that we will use the most are: –kilo –centi –milli Kilo (k) hecto (h) deca (D) Base Units meter gram Liter second deci (d) centi (c) milli (m)

Metric System Basics If you needed to measure length you would choose meter as your base unit –Length of a tree branch 1.5 meters –Length of a room 5 meters –Length of a ball of twine stretched out 25 meters

Metric System Converting But what if you need to measure a longer distance, like from your house to school? –Let’s say you live approximately 10 miles from school 10 miles = 16093 meters –16093 is a big number, but what if you could add a prefix onto the base unit to make it easier to manage: 16093 meters = 16.093 kilometers

These prefixes are based on powers of 10. What does this mean? –From each prefix every “step” is either: 10 times larger or 10 times smaller –For example Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli Metric System Converting

–Centimeters are 10 times larger than millimeters so it takes more millimeters for the same length 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters Example not to scale 1 mm 1 cm 41 4041 40 Metric System Converting

An easy way to move within the metric system is by moving the decimal point one place for each “step” desired Example: change meters to centimeters Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 1.00 meter = 100. centimeters Metric System Converting

If you move to the left in the diagram, move the decimal to the left If you move to the right in the diagram, move the decimal to the right kilo hectodeca meter liter gram second deci centimilli Metric System Converting

Now let’s try our previous example from meters to kilometers: 16093 meters = _________km So for every “step” from the base unit to kilo, we move the decimal 1 place in that direction Metric System Converting

–How many steps are there from meters to kilometers? Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 3 steps! Metric System Converting

–In which direction are we moving? Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli To the left Metric System Converting

16093 meters = _________km –We are moving 3 steps to the left 16093 m Where is the decimal to start with? Metric System Converting

16093 meters = _________km –We are moving 3 steps to the left 16093. Where is the decimal to start with? Metric System Converting

16093 meters = _________km –We are moving 3 steps to the left 16093. Metric System Converting

16093 meters = _________km –We are moving 3 steps to the left 16.093 Metric System Converting

16093 m = 16.093 km Metric System Converting

Now let’s start from centigrams and convert to kilograms 400000 centigrams = ________ kilograms Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli Metric System Converting

–How many steps are there from centigrams to kilograms? Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 5 steps! Metric System Converting

–In which direction are we moving? Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli To the left Metric System Converting

400000 cg = ________ kg –We are moving 5 steps to the left 400000 Where is the decimal to start with? Metric System Converting

400000 cg = ________ kg –We are moving 5 steps to the left 400000. Where is the decimal to start with? Metric System Converting

400000 cg = ________ kg –We are moving 5 steps to the left 400000. Metric System Converting

400000 cg = ________ kg –We are moving 5 steps to the left 4.00000 Metric System Converting

400000 cg = 4.00000 kg OR 400000 cg = 4 kg Metric System Converting

Now let’s start from meters and convert to centimeters 5 m = ____cm Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli Metric System Converting

How many steps and in which direction are we moving? m  cm Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 2 steps to the right! Metric System Converting

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 2 steps to the right! 5. What do we do now? Metric System Converting

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 2 steps to the right! 5. We add zeros when there is an empty space Metric System Converting

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 2 steps to the right! 5.00 We add zeros when there is an empty space Metric System Converting

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 2 steps to the right! 500. Metric System Converting

5m = 500. cm OR 5m = 500 cm Metric System Converting

NOW YOU TRY In your notebook complete the following problems: 125 s = _____ ms 324 dl = _____ kl 65.4 mm = _____ m 2.3 Ds = _____ ms

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 3 steps to the right 125 s = _____ ms 125 s = 125000ms

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 4 steps to the left 324 dl = _____ kl 324 dl =.0324 kl

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 3 steps to the left 65.4 mm = _____ m 65.4 mm =.0654 m

Kilo hectodeca Base Units meter gram Liter second decicentimilli 4 steps to the right 2.3 Ds = _____ ms 2.3 Ds = 23000ms

Summary/Questions Take 4 minutes to write your summary for today and then questions and headings on the left side of the notes. Questions to answer in your summary: 1.How are the prefixes setup? 2.How do you convert between units?
