FOLD and LABEL your paper as shown here so you’re ready to move on when the bell rings! Fold your paper in half twice, so you have four boxes. Label the boxes 1-4 EXACTLY like mine (3 & 4 are supposed to be upside down!). 1243

Now let’s make a booklet… Cut along the fold line between #1 and #4 – be sure to STOP when you get to the center!! Fold the half with 3 & 4 back, so you are looking at 1 & 2. Fold #1 to the right. Write GENETICS VOCABULARY on the back of that page.

Now let’s make a booklet… Turn the whole thing over, and fold #4 to the left. Turn your booklet over. You should now be able to flip your pages and see them in order, 1-2-3-4

What are the vocabulary words? On page 1, write the following words (leave SPACE to write definitions!): DOMINANT RECESSIVE ALLELE TRAIT On page 3, write the following words (leave SPACE to write definitions!): HOMOZYGOUS HETEROZYGOUS GENOTYPE PHENOTYPE You will fill in definitions as you complete today’s activity.

Reebop Chromosomes On your table, you have a bag with one set of Mom chromosomes (pink) and one set of Dad chromosomes (blue). Take out both sets of chromosomes and line up the pink set according to size. Now line up the blue set according to size. Notice the letter on each chromosome? The capital letter represents DOMINANT. The lowercase letter represents RECESSIVE. With your partner, come up with your best definitions for these two words, and write them on page 1 in your booklet.

Wait…how much of your DNA comes from each parent?

Reebop Chromosomes Now, take one pink and one blue chromosome of each size. Line them up from largest to smallest. Each letter represents an ALLELE. Combinations of alleles determine your TRAITS. With your partner, come up with your best definitions for these two words, and write them in your booklet. Look at the combination of letters for each chromosome size. Both capital or both lowercase represents HOMOZYGOUS. One capital and one lowercase represents HETEROZYGOUS. With your partner, come up with your best definitions for these two words, and write them in your booklet.

Reebop Chromosomes Look at your Mom & Dad chromosomes TOGETHER (AA, Aa, aa). This combination represents GENOTYPE. With your partner, come up with your best definition for this word, and write it on page 3 in your booklet. On the BACK of page 4, write down all of your genotypes (Aa, nn, EE, etc.)

Reebop Chromosomes Look at the chart below and find the characteristics that applies to your genotypes. Write them on the back of page 4. This represents PHENOTYPE. With your partner, come up with your best definition for this word, and write it on page 3 in your booklet. CharacteristicGenotype / phenotype code antennae AA = 2 antennaeAa = 2 antennaeaa = no antennae body segments BB = 3 body segmentsBb = 3 body segmentsbb = 2 body segments tail TT = curly tailTt = curly tailtt = straight tail nose NN = red noseNn = red nosenn = yellow nose legs LL = blue legsLl = blue legsll = red legs gender XX = femaleXY = male eyes EE = 2 eyesEe = 2 eyesee = one eye humps HH = 1 humpHh = 1 humphh = 3 humps

Now what? On page 2 & 4, draw pictures to represent each of the eight vocabulary words. When you finish, unfold your booklet. On the blank side, draw your baby Reebop!
