1 Informational Text Elements INSTRUCTOR: KYLE BRITT

2 Objectives  Identify and analyze informational text elements.  Draw inferences about the text’s message based on the elements of the text.

3 Warm Up  Compose a paragraph describing your journey from your third block class to the cafeteria.  Once complete, underline all prepositions; [box] all objects; and (circle) all prepositional phrases.  When you have identified all the prepositional elements, compose a new paragraph that has no prepositional phrases.

4 Informational Text Elements 1. pictures/captions 2. headings/ subheadings 3. title/subtitles 4. organization 5. bold-faced, italics, 6. punctuation 7. date, time, author

5 What do these elements tell us about the text?  Provides useful information about the message contained in the text.  Visual representation of message  Publisher  Date/time  Source  Bias?  Unfair treatment of the issue  All of these elements should be included in any annotation.

6 Honors  VCR quiz 1  Flip upside down when complete  Take out your novel and read silently until all quizzes are complete

7 English I Pop Quiz  Preposition Identification Quiz  Copy sentences onto a piece of paper and identify the preposition(s), objects, and phrases.  Identify any conjunctions in the sentences. Label them as coordinating or correlative. 1. At the new house, we could get the sofa through neither the back door nor the front door, and Uncle Waldo strained his back trying. 2. On the second load, either Fred or my father lost his grip, and the refrigerator fell on Dad’s foot. 3. By law, undersized lobsters must be returned to the sea. 4. J.D., Yolanda, and I looked around the museum and read the information about some exhibits.

8 Individual Practice  Read the article about Disney.  Answer the article questions.  Annotate the text.  Find examples of supporting details  Main Idea  Visual Features  Informational text elements  What do they tell you about the text? Bias? Unfair treatment of the issue?

9 Group Practice  Draw an example of a fictional news article  Draw annotation techniques that demonstrate:  chunking/gisting  Supporting elements  Visual Features  Informational text elements

10 Closure  Pair with your group member and discuss the Disney article  Share your annotations and why you chose the specific information  Share your groups findings with the class.  Homework:  Finish the questions and annotations for the Disney article  Complete your preposition paragraph.
