TKaM Chapter 12 -15 Southern Gothic Elements and Different Perspectives

Partner Share Take a few minutes and share with your elbow partner the text you found in Chapters 7-8 that were examples of the Southern Gothic elements of: Setting as Character Sense of foreboding Description of Nature Hints at the Supernatural

Classroom Open the assignment entitled: Southern Gothic Short Write The directions state: Using the text you found for the gothic elements, explain how Chapters 7-8 create tension in the novel and serve to foreshadow the troublesome events of the trial and its aftermath. Think about the unseasonal snow and the fire and the events surrounding those.

Shifting Perspectives Part of “Coming of Age” is understanding that your perspective of the world is not the only one -- that other perspectives based on different cultures, nationalities, religions, political beliefs, customs, languages, and values are just as real and valid as your own. Where do we see this today?

Theme Statement “Coming of age” involved recognizing different perspectives. We will read a short excerpt from Chapter 12. Your task is to follow along and look for evidence of how setting, character, and conflict contribute to Scout and Jem’s recognition of a perspective different than their own. Mark those with a sticky note.

Classroom Open the assignment entitled: Outline for a Passage Analysis On this assignment, I have given you the thesis. Your task is to take the evidence you found for different perspectives in the excerpt we read and use those to write what could be three different topic sentences and then include the piece of evidence you found for that topic sentence. Then using the rest of Chapter 12, look for more textual evidence to support the topic sentence. Then write a conclusion that discusses what was learned and how this was a coming of age experience.

Homework Read Chapters 16-19
