3 When should citation be used? Anytime a quote, paraphrase, or summary of another person’s work is used. When in doubt, cite it! It is better to be safe than sorry You need to change 90% of the words before you can claim it as your own.

4 How to Cite in-text When citing a quote, summary, or paraphrase within a paper the author’s last name or first major word of the title is used followed by the page number. (Fitzgerald 1) OR If the author or title of the piece is introduced first, just the page number is cited in parentheses (2). Examples Examples will be shown on next slide.

5 Imbedded In-Text Citation Example: Text: F. Scott Fitzgerald used ”…a single green light, minute and far away…” ( 26) to represent Gatsby’s longing for Daisy. OR Reference: The use of ”…a single green light, minute and far away…” ( Fitzgerald 26) to represent Gatsby’s longing for Daisy is a symbol that is still used to today to also represent the corruption of the American Dream.

6 How to Create a Works Cited The following are the most commonly used resources for a paper: –Internet –Magazine –Newspaper –Book

7 Proper formatting Alphabetical order by author’s last name or first major word of the title (don’t alphabetize by “A, An,And, or The”). Do not number entries Double space and Indent 2nd and 3 rd lines

8 Internet Citation 1. The name of author, or first major word of the title. 2. Title of article, poem, short story, etc. in “quotation marks.” 3. Name of editor, compiler, or translator of text preceded by appropriate abbreviations. 4. Publication information for any print version of the source/ 5. Title of Internet site (if given). 6. Name of editor of site (if given). 7. Date of electronic publication, of last update or posting. 8. Name of the subscription service (if applicable) and if a name of a library is given, the name and geographic location. 9. Name of institution or organization sponsoring the site (if not cited earlier). 10.Date when the researcher accessed the source. 11.URL of the source or the URL of the sites pages.
