Sin: should not, can not, and when we do. 1 JOHN 1:8-2:2

1 John 1:8-2:2 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. 2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

We should not sin Romans 6 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

We can resist sin Romans 6 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. Philippians 4 13 I can do all things because of Christ who strengthens me.

But when we do… 1 John 1:8-2:2 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Our Father in heaven: May your holy name be honoured; may your Kingdom come; may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need. Forgive us the wrongs we have done, as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us. Do not bring us to hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One.’ For yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
