2 ESOL Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) offers English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes to help non-native adult students learn English for community and work environments. To accommodate students unable to attend on campus, CCBC is offering the courses in blended and fully online formats.

3 Levels & Instruction Method Beginner level: – Blended Intermediate level: – Blended Advanced level: – Online only

4 Funding Beginning & intermediate levels: – Fully funded by grant from the Maryland Department of labor, Licensing, and Regulation (DLLR). – For 8 years Advanced level: – Funded by student tuition.

5 Beginner & Intermediate Courses Offered three times per year: – fall, winter/spring, and summer Each course lasts 12 weeks Maximum of 30 students per course per semester. Blended sections: – two hours in classroom for one night per week – four hours per week of online study

6 Advanced Courses Offered three times per year: – fall, winter/spring, and summer Each course lasts 12 weeks Maximum of 30 students per course per semester. Requires six to eight hours per week of online study.

7 Course Development Developed over one year One full-time instructional designer One full-time administrative person. One project manager – ½ of full time post Updated in the 4 th year of teaching and presented from year five onwards.

8 Course Management The courses will utilize the services of: – one full-time project manager ¼ management time – one full-time administrative support person – one part-time instructor paid hourly rate – one part-time tutor paid hourly rate

9 Course Materials Beginner & Intermediate levels (per student) – 1 professionally recorded language DVD include practice dialogues of real-world conversations – a 120-page printed workbook (10 pages per week) include practice in reading and writing using real-life scenarios and graphics as well as games and puzzles to aid student retention – CCBC Blackboard Learning Management System – ESOL computer lab

10 Course Materials (contd) Advanced course – a 180-page printed workbook (15 pages per week) – CCBC Blackboard Learning Management System – ESOL computer lab

11 Production of Course Materials Production of the DVDs will be done in- house with CCBC’s media production. The workbooks will be printed in-house.

12 Student Support One instructor responsible for training and assessments. One tutor to assist outside the classroom.

13 Assessment Each course will conduct: – an exam once a month – a final exam will check for proficiency before student is permitted to move to the next course level.

14 Enrollment Each of the three courses will support 30 students per semester – 90 students Total enrollment for the year (3 semesters): – 270 students

15 Tuition Beginner and intermediate courses: – the grant will cover the cost of the tuition – student will pay for computer lab & LMS fees Advanced course: – student will pay for Tuition computer lab & LMS fees

16 Fees CCBC Blackboard – $15 per student per semester. Access to the campus ESOL computer lab: – $25 per student per semester
