RATING FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR

Rate of Play For a game to be rated each player must have the following minimum periods in which to complete all the moves, assuming the game lasts 60 moves. Where at least one of the players in the tournament has a rating 2200 or higher, each player must have a minimum of 120 minutes. Where at least one of the players in the tournament has a rating 1600 or higher, each player must have a minimum of 90 minutes. Where all the players in the tournament are rated below 1600, each player must have a minimum of 60 minutes. Where a number of moves is specified it shall be 40.

FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR Duration There must be no more than 12 hours of play in one day. Tournaments other than leagues should last no more than 90 days without approval. (For such events results must be reported monthly.)

FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR Conditions for first Rating Based on 5 games - need not be met in one tournament. Results from other tournaments played within consecutive rating periods totalling not more than 26 months, are pooled to obtain the initial rating. Must score at least ½pt for the first performance to count. Must be at least 1000 (calculated by putting all the results together as if in one tournament).

FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR Composition of Tournament Round Robin One third of the players must be rated with a minimum of 4 (National Championships with at least 3 rated players or 2 for a women’s championship) Double round events must have at least 6 players. Unrated players who score 0 are ignored. Unrated players who score are included in everyone’s rating calculation Where one or more games is defaulted it must be reported as a Swiss.

FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR Composition of Tournament Swiss or Team An unrated player must score for his games to count, even if this is only one game. For rated players only games against rated opponents count for rating. Matches Where the match has already been decided further games are not rated. Matches where a player is unrated do not count for rating.

FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR Calculating Ratings Unrated players If an unrated player scores 0 in his first event his score is ignored. Once a player has a ‘partial’ rating then all of his games from then on count towards his rating. In a Swiss or Team tournament the rating is calculated based on the average of the opponents and the percentage score. If the score is 50% then his rating is equal to the opponents’ average. If it is more than 50% then the rating is the opponent average + 20 for each half point scored above 50%. If it is less than 50% then the table opposite is used. pdpdp pdpdp pdpdp pdpdp pdpdp pdpdp 1.0800.83273.66117.49-7.32-133.15-296.99677.82262,65110.48-14.31-141.14-309.98589.81251.64102.47-21.30-149.13-322.97538.80240.6395.46-29.29-158.12-336.96501.79230.6287.45-36.28-166.11-351.95470.78220.6180.44-43.27-175.10-366.94444.77211.6072.43-50.26-184.09-383.93422.76202.5965.42-57.25-193.08-401.92401.75193.5857.41-65.24-202.07-422.91383.74184.5750.40-72.23-211.06-444.90366.73175.5643.39-80.22-220.05-470.89351.72166.5536.38-87.21-230.04-501.88336.71158,5439.37-95.20-240.03-538.87322.70149.5321.36-102.19-251.02-589.86309.69141.5314.35-110.18-262.01-677.85296.68133.517.34-117.17-273.00-800.84284,67125.500.33-125.16-284

FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR Calculating Ratings Rated Players Player S Short has a rating of 1904. In a tournament he plays the opponents shown opposite. Dif is the difference in his rating from that of his opponent. Res is his result in the game. The change in his rating is calculated from the table below. If Short is higher rated then the expected result is found in the H column and if he is lower rated it is found in the L column. This figure gives his expected score. Short scored 3 points but his expected score is 2.94 so Shorts rating will increase. The amount of increase will depend on his K factor. If Short is a new junior then his K factor will be 40 so his rating will have increased by.06 x 40 or 2.4 D Rtg Dif PDHPDHL D Rtg Dif PDHPDHL D Rtg Dif PDHPDHL D Rtg Dif PDHPDHL 0-3.50 92-98.63.37198-206.76.24345-357.89.11 4-10.51.4999-106.64.36207-215.77.23358-374.90.10 11-17.52.48107-113.65.35216-225.78.22375-391.91.09 18-25.53.47114-121.66.34226-235.79.21392-411.92.08 26-32.54.46122-129.67.33236-245.80.20412-432.93.07 33-39.55.45130-137.68.32246-256.81.19433-456.94.06 40-46.56.44138-145.69.31257-267.82.18457-484.95.05 47-53.57.43146-153.70.30268-278.83.17485-517.96.04 54-61.58.42154-162.71.29279-290.84.16518-559.97.03 62-68.59.41163-170.72.28291-302.85.15560-619.98.02 69-76.60.40171-179.73.27303-315.86.14620-735.99.01 77-83.61.39180-188.74.26316-328.87.13>7351.0.00 84-91.62.38189-197.75.25329-344.88.12 Short, S1904 OpponentRatingDifResExp Thomas, T194541-1-0.44 Upton, U1632272+½-½.83 Victor, V200197-0-1.37 Walker, W196460-½-½.42 Young, Y2020116-0-1.34 Zhou, Z187529+1-0.54 Total32.94

RATING LIST The rating list appears monthly A deadline is set for submitting games. Tournaments finished after this go into the following months rating list. Hastings starts in late December and finishes in January. A player is unrated at the start of the event (so remains so for his opponents). However that player gains a rating with the January list. When the event is rated his games will be treated as if he had his rating from the beginning. FIDE ARBITER SEMINAR
